Design for the Other 90% is an exhibit of collaborative invention: first-world designers listening to third-world people and devising tools to help the 90% of our human family that lives in deep poverty. Totally inspiring.
American Rainbow Rapid Response (ARRR) is a group that grew out of the New Waveland Cafe, one of the most remarkable volunteer answers to Hurricane Katrina, where a bunch of long-haired hippie freaks fed 147,000 people hot, organic, fresh food (we Bohemians can do whatever we damn well set our minds to). Now they are on FEMA's first-call list. They preparing for the next disaster, and you don't have to have money to help. Ecology Action has been teaching people around the world how to grow nutritious food, earn income, and sustain fertile soil on tiny amounts of land since the early 70's. Their work is nothing short of miraculous, and they continue quietly and steadily, every single day. The Young Shakespeare Players are a band of kids aged six to eighteen who perform full-length Shakespeare plays several times a year here in Madison, Wisconsin. All shows are free, and almost every single actor delivers a first-rate performance. It is an incredible program run on an eensy budget. Places to buy books:
